Singapore Introduces Extra Security Checks at Border Checkpoints

If you’re travelling to Singapore soon, it might be wise to plan a little extra time at the border. The change is relatively small, but travellers could spend a few more minutes at immigration than they normally would.

Since 28 February 2026, Singapore has been carrying out extra security checks at all entry points. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the checks apply to airports, land checkpoints and sea ports.

According to officials, the move is a precaution due to the current global security situation, including recent developments in the Middle East.

Singapore usually has one of the fastest immigration systems anywhere in the world, especially at Changi Airport where many travellers clear immigration within minutes. However, with the new checks now in place, the arrival process may take slightly longer than usual.

What Travellers May Notice

Immigration agents may take a bit longer to review passports and travel documents upon arrival in Singapore. Cargo shipments are also being checked more carefully, and vehicles coming into Singapore from Malaysia may also be subject to more detailed inspections at land checkpoints.

The inspections are taking place at all major entry points, including Changi Airport, the land crossings between Singapore and Malaysia, and passenger terminals at sea ports.

Possible Delays at Immigration

Because of these additional procedures, travellers may notice slightly longer lines at immigration counters, especially during busy arrival times. The delays may be more noticeable at the land checkpoints between Singapore and Malaysia, where traffic is often heavier. Therefore, ICA advises travellers to plan ahead and allow some extra time when arriving in Singapore.

Tips for Travellers

To help make the arrival process smoother, travellers are advised to:

  • Keep passports and travel documents ready.
  • Submit the SG Arrival Card online before travelling.
  • Allow extra time in case queues are longer.
  • Follow instructions from immigration officers.

For most travellers, the delay should be very small, usually just a few extra minutes. Authorities say the extra checks are only a precaution to keep Singapore’s borders safe while still welcoming visitors.
